Thanks to Martha, Ali, Rose, and Andrew at Folio Books and to everyone who came out for the August 2nd event. We had a lovely time sipping iced tea and talking nails!
I'm excited to be holding court at the fantastic independent bookstore, Folio Books, located in San Francisco's Noe Valley, when I'm in town on Sunday, August 2. At 3 pm, please come by for an informal meet-the-author/ Sunday tea/ nail polish swap. I'll be signing books and giving away the last bottles of my limited edition OPI nail color, Switchboard Starlet, with book purchase. Thank you to Martha Pettit for staging this fun event--hope to see a few of you Bay Area lovelies there!

On Thursday, April 23rd, I'm coming back to the Brooklyn Museum for a book signing from 6-8 pm. It's part of their Members Spring Sale Week programming and an evening that includes nail art by the fabulous and talented Vanity Projects crew. See event webpage for details.
I recently enjoyed speaking with the great kids and budding non-fiction writers of my friend Alexis' class at P.S. 63 in Manhattan's East Village. The class prepared engaging questions for me, with some I really had to think about: How many drafts did my book go through? Who's my favorite writer?
I hope I imparted at least one bit of wisdom: a book can start with something you really love or a question about how something came to be. Or both, as in my case!
Thanks again to my wonderful hosts at the Phoenix Art Museum and the Arizona Costume Institute who invited me to kick off their 2014-15 Second Wednesday lecture series on September 10th. It was a big, attentive audience at an incredible institution--an honor and great time, both!
The Middlesex County Historical Society, where I got my start as a historian, is a jewel in my hometown's crown! I'm pleased to participate in a special evening at the lovely Wadsworth Mansion on Tuesday, August 12 that will raise much-needed funds for this wonderful institution. For more information about the book talk and dessert reception, please contact the Society at 860.346.0746 or visit its Facebook page.
The wonderful bookstore WORD in Greenpoint, Brooklyn will be hosting a fabulous evening for nail lovers, starting at 7 pm on Tuesday, June 3rd. I'll begin with a talk about the surprisingly rich history of nail polish; thereafter, attendees may participate in a nail product swap. Bring in that bottle that never quite did it for you and go home with a new nail novelty to try. The book will be available for sale and signing, and refreshments will be served. Please come if you can!
Last Friday, I was so pleased to have two speaking engagements. The first was at my graduate-level alma mater, NYU Steinhardt, for students in the Costume Studies graduate program. What an honor to come back and discuss how I developed my thesis into a book! (I neglected to take a picture of the group, but here I am with the program's director and my wonderful former advisor, Nancy Deihl.)
After, onward to Sydney Maresca's Costume Design I & II class at Marymount Manhattan College, where I spoke about nail history and the relationship between clothing and cosmetic fashions. We had a great time! Please get in touch if you'd like to line up a lecture or round table about nails...I'd love to keep the academic discussion going!
A big thank you to everyone who came out for the April 25th release party for Nails. What a memorable evening! As these photos by Cody Swanson testify, Rita Pinto's fabulous Vanity Projects space was filled to capacity with people getting amazing nail art, flipping through the book, lining up for their special inscriptions, and generally having a great time.
